Music on the Levels announces further details of its free concert on Sunday 24 March 2019 at 3.30 pm in St Mary’s Church, Westonzoyland, with performers from the Centre for Young Musicians Taunton (CYMT) and Taunton Preparatory School.

These two leading musical establishments combine in a celebration of young musical talent. The music will be in a wide variety of styles including pieces by Haydn, Alan Menken, Jerry Bock and plenty more to enjoy. The young performers will be accompanied by Frances Webb on piano.

Thanks to grants from Sedgemoor District Council and generous donations, the concerts are free to attend, although there is a modest charge for the sumptuous home-made teas that are available to enjoy while you listen.

Centre for Young Musicians Taunton(CYMT), a division of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, exists to provide all 5-18 year olds the opportunity to collaborate, write, play, produce, have fun, and develop musical skills, knowledge and confidence with other young musicians.

The Centre runs on Saturday mornings in term time at Richard Huish College, Taunton.  Currently 38 schools across Somerset, Dorset & Devon are represented by students at CYMT, which is open to all young musicians from beginners to advanced.  There are no auditions and students can start at any point in the academic year.

CYMT offers lots of practical music-making activities. There are bands and orchestra as well as music production, theory of music, percussion, strings, brass, woodwind, piano workshops, singing ensembles, and much more.  Everyone finds a welcoming, friendly and all-inclusive atmosphere at CYMT with regular opportunities to perform in any style of music.  CYMT is running a summer holiday course in mid-August for 10-18s, which will be a fun-filled week of music and drama.

There are Centres in London, Norwich, Saffron Walden, Peterborough and Taunton, so CYM is helping to establish a talent pipeline for young musicians.  The CYMT experience and termly visits from the Guildhall School provide students, schools and teachers with support to achieve the best possible music outcomes for students and the community.  Financial support is available to help with the fees through generous bursary schemes from Sound Foundation Somerset music education hub and the Guildhall School Access Agreement.

While Taunton Preparatory Schoolhas a strong focus on the core subjects of the curriculum, it also encourages individual talents and special interests. With its own performing arts centre giving access to a variety of specialist music facilities, pupils are able to explore their musical and performance abilities to the full.
